Chapter 14

Off the Diet

The snow had thickened by the time they finished, a blur of large flakes that floated past the window and settled in the grass, quickly obscuring any remaining green. Dorian watched one flake flutter down and disappear into the mass of white on the ground.

Jules watched him for a minute, then leaned forward over the table. “You have time to come back to my place for a while?”

Dorian shrugged. “Yeah. I don’t have anywhere else to—” He stopped himself as he caught Jules’ eye. “Yeah, for a little bit.”

After all, Jules didn’t know why Dorian had come, that he had absolutely no plans except to see him. He didn’t even have a hotel room anywhere. In retrospect, he hadn’t really thought this through. He’d shown up with absolutely no warning. Jules could have a boyfriend, or even girlfriend, for all he knew, and here he was showing up with misconceptions about him.

Jules didn’t comment on it, though, much to Dorian’s relief, and slid out of the booth, dropping a few bills on the check and not bothering to let Dorian offer to pay.

Dorian pulled on his jacket, grabbing his cane as he stood up, his ankle protesting from the prolonged inactivity of sitting. He ignored it, though, following Jules past the cashier.

The girl smiled and waved at them as they left and Jules turned to her.

“Tell Janey I say hey,” he said as Dorian pulled open the door to a blast of swirling snow.

“Will do!” she replied cheerfully.

Dorian glanced over as Jules stepped out behind him. “Do you go there a lot?”

Jules shrugged, shivered in the cold with only his sweatshirt on. “Not too much. After all, it is off the diet.” He nudged Dorian with a knowing smile and pulled out his car keys. “Just don’t tell my coach.”

Dorian was glad when Jules didn’t open his door this time and just went around the front to his own.

Snow settled in his hair and on his jacket as he pulled the door open and climbed in. Jules hopped in the other side, immediately turning the heater up.

“Shit, it’s freezing,” he said, starting the car. “It’s not cold down where you are, right?”

“It’s like seventy, maybe,” Dorian replied. “Sixty at night.”

“Fuck, I need to move down there,” Jules said, shaking his head. “Is there a Center down there?”

“Not really. I used to train at school with the team.”

Jules nodded vaguely, not really listening as he pulled out of the lot and into the snow. Dorian contented himself with looking out the window, glad he wasn’t the one driving. He hated driving in the rain let alone snow.

He wasn’t sure what he’d expected coming up here, that Jules would greet him with a kiss and tell him how much he’d missed him, that Jules wouldn’t flirt with the waitresses. He should have known better, but a tiny part of him, the part he’d never admit to anyone, had hoped it might happen.

Then again, he’d never been in a real relationship.
